NST is one of the Bowen Therapies and is primarily a remedial therapy, which offers the body an opportunity to restore structural integrity,allowing greater health potential. The name is taken from its creator Australian Tom Bowen. During the session the therapist will make gentle rolling movements over precise points on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body, mostly using their fingers and thumbs. These movements aim to stimulate the muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body, encouraging the body to realign itself. During the treatment there are short pauses, which allow the body to absorb the effects of the subtle movements and fine adjustments.

 

What does NST Treat?

 

The gentle nature of NST means that it is appropriate for everyone, from new-born baby's to the elderly and infirm. There are a great variety of conditions which NST can help. Many types of musculo-skeletal disorders can be helped such as tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, jaw problems, repetitive strain injury and general back and neck pain. Knee, ankle problems and headaches. NST can also be very effective in the treatment of stress, tension and energy disturbances such as chronic fatigue as well as other conditions concerned with respiration and digestion like asthma and IBS. It can also be of great assistance in recovery from injury and accident.

 

Format/approach.

 

An NST treatment will take 60 minutes. At the initial consultation a thorough medical history will be taken and if appropriate blood pressure, neurological and orthopaedic tests done. and is relatively non-invasive as it can be performed through light clothing. To achieve the maximum benefits from NST it is possible that the therapist may recommend that it is not used alongside other manual therapies such as massage or reflexology as this interferes with the action of the NST. All treatment is individualised and the number of sessions needed by each patient will differ, the appropriate number of treatments are discussed at the first appointment.
