CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a manual therapy which uses a gentle touch and subtle manipulation to encourage structural and physiological rebalancing using the body’s own healing energy. The CranioSacral Therapist recognises the importance of the body functioning as a whole and is able to detect the subtle twists, pulls and restrictions in the body's functioning and helps the patient's body return to a greater sense of balance, health and well-being. Rather than working on bones and muscles, the practitioner focuses on the connective tissue. All systems and structures are integrated and interrelating. Dysfunction in any system produces compensatory responses through the whole body.
Attitudes, behaviour, habits and emotional responses contribute to how the body is held in physical shape and posture, which affects how it moves. Any condition manifesting as pain, stiffness or dysfunction also contains emotional, behavioural and other components that can be addressed and released during CranioSacral therapy.
Who is CranioSacral Therapy for?
Being holistic, the therapy can improve general health, but is commonly used for symptoms of stress, chronic pain, Migraines, back injuries, depression, scoliosis, coordination problems, post-operative care, sports injuries, birth trauma, hyperactivity and hormonal imbalances. Many people report a feeling of “emotional release” during a session with the therapist; as it is very gentle it is suitable for babies, children and the elderly.
Format / Approach
CranioSacral Therapy is very gentle and non-invasive 'hands on' therapy. You may feel a deep sense of relaxation, and possibly be aware of some heat, tingling or other sensations. The practitioner listens via the hands to what is going on in the body and in this way both identifies and treats pains or tensions held in the body. Typical places of contact and to work from are the head, the sacrum (at the base of the spine) and the feet, but it could be anywhere on the body depending on what is being worked with.
