About HomeopathyGo back to The Practitioners

Homeopathy is a system of therapy that concentrates on care of the whole person by methods that are gentle and sympathetic to the body's needs. It works by stimulating the body's own ability to heal itself. It developed from investigations carried out in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by German physician, Dr Samuel Hahnemann. This development has been generally independent of other kinds of therapy, but homeopathy is, in many ways, complementary to other systems of health care, including Western orthodox medicine. Although conventional doctors cannot explain exactly how homeopathy works, work it does, often with quite dramatic and remarkable results.

One of the basic principles of homeopathy is 'like is cured by like'. Together with this principle, homeopathy couples a second, equally important concept: the use of the minimum dose. The appropriateness of homeopathic medicines has been determined by monitoring the effects of various substances on healthy people. This is known as a 'proving'. A patient who displays signs and symptoms similar to those produced by the large dose is given a minimum dose of the same substance to stimulate the body's defence systems.

One major advantage of homeopathy is its safety. While its remedies are powerful in action, working with the body's own defences, their actual measurable strength is too low to give rise to the undesirable side-effects that many modern drugs produce.

According to homeopathic principles, seeking help with this healing process is necessary only when your own self-healing mechanism fails and is unable to complete the normal process of returning you to your usual state of health. That is when you need homeopathy.

Other InformationGo back to The Practitioners

You should allow between one and a half and two hours for your first appointment. During this time, the homeopath will want to know many things including childhood, childhood illnesses and food likes and dislikes. Some information may appear to have little or nothing to do with your present condition, however to the homeopath, your whole story is relevant. Even your preference of season can help a practitioner find the most appropriate remedy.
