About Chiropody / PodiatryGo back to The Practitioners

Chiropodists (often referred to as podiatrists) are responsible for the specialist care of the lower limb. There is no difference between the two terms chiropody and podiatry and in turn assess, diagnose and treat abnormalities of the lower limb and foot. The chiropodist is responsible for patients of all ages from birth to the elderly and is expected to manage patients of high risk suffering from conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and vascular disease.

To be state registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) as a chiropodist, you must undertake a 3 year degree course at a recognised school, which includes the development of a wide range of clinical and communication skills. From this compulsory course of study it ensures that the practitioner is competent in all aspects of chiropody. This ranges from general foot care such as routine nail care, treatment of corns and callous, verruca and ingrowing toenails to more specialised areas such nail surgery, sports injury, biomechanics and gait assessment, and orthotics.

Chiropodists are primary care practitioners and work as part of a health care team liaising closely with several other disciplines to aid in the management of the patient.
